Now more than ever, we’re investing more time and effort into taking care of our skin. Yet despite these efforts, pimples on your face still manage to appear. Unfortunately, the cause of these breakouts– hormones, genetics, among others– aren’t always clear.

Daily habits that may cause pimples on the face

With that, there are definitely things you can do to take control of your acne situation. The catch is that they may actually be habits you don’t realize you’re doing.
You may already be aware of some of these acne-causing habits: using pore-clogging products, using perfumed laundry detergent, not washing up after working out, among others.  But as they say, knowledge is power, so we’ve uncovered more surprising triggers that may be causing your breakouts or exacerbate them.

5 reasons why your acne is getting worse everyday

Using your phone

The average person can touch their phone over 2000 times per day, so you can just imagine all the dirt and bacteria buildup on your screen that comes into contact with your face. So if you have breakouts around your chin, cheeks, and mouth, a dirty phone may be the culprit. Keep your screen clear by giving it a much-deserved rubdown with antibacterial wipes. You can also switch to making calls with your headphones so you can avoid contact with your phone.

Applying makeup with dirty brushes and sponges

Your makeup tools, brush bristles in particular, are magnets for oil, dirt, and bacteria. So unless you clean them religiously, it’s likely that they are contributing to your pimple problems. After using your brushes, wipe them down with a makeup-remover wipe. Then make it a habit to wash your brushes and sponges weekly– including the little ones that come with your compacts. Soak them in a mixture of warm water and gentle shampoo, rinse well, then let them air-dry on a paper towel.

Over-cleansing

Cleansing is a crucial part of any skincare routine but if you’re doing it wrong, it may actually make things worse. Take a step back: are you cleansing too often? How often do you exfoliate? If yes, you may want to dial down a bit. Cleanse no more than twice a day and limit the exfoliation to once or twice a week.

Using dirty pillowcases and face towels

Your dirty laundry may literally be making things worse for you. Think about it: your face is pressed on your pillow for hours at a time, and if it’s not clean, you are basically pressing dead skin cells and bacteria onto your skin. The same goes for your face towel. Unless that’s clean, you could just be wiping germs all over your freshly-cleansed skin.

Getting impatient with your acne treatment

Are you the type to try new treatments every week to see which works? Acne is understandably frustrating but this approach may irritate your skin and make your situation worse. You’ll need to use a product correctly for more than 2 weeks to see any improvement.

Now that you know some of the lesser-known pimple triggers, you can take the necessary steps to prevent it.
